Munro Family History
Recorded in various spellings including Munro, Munroe, Monro, and Monroe, this famous surname is Scottish. According to the various histories of the clan there is a legend that the original nameholders came from Ireland in the 12th century. The surname certainly appears to be Gaelic, and could derive from the name 'Maolruadh'. This translates as 'the red haired tonsured one' from 'maol' meaning bald, and 'ruadh', red or auburn. However in Scotland there is also a different claim that the origin is locational, although still Irish, and a such describes 'a man from the River Roe' in County Derry. It is also claimed that the surname had the Irish prefix 'O' meaning grandson or male descendant, but this was certainly not used in Scotland...Select Audience

Thomas Monroe
Hello, the Munro side of my family is lost in mystery and I don't know a single living relative outside of my father's brothers and sisters. My grandfather was born in Flint Michigan, Duane Duncan Monroe. My Father is Daniel David Monroe, and I'm Thomas Duane Monroe. My grandfather Monroe died when my father was 12 and he lost all contact with any other Monroe's. Grandfather Monroe's mother was Clara. That's all we know! If anyone knows more, please reach out.

Munro
I am an author writing a series of historical fiction novels on Clan Donald. In my research, I discovered the "Monroes" from the innermost Roe-water in Derry were a part of Aine O'Cahan's dowry of 1400 Irishmen of every surname under the O'Cahans in Ulster. These men came to the Scottish Isles when she married Angus Og Macdonald in 1299. There are many early sources that record this. So, they were originally Irish and then became Scots, flourishing in the Isles. Hope this helps.
