MCDONOUGH Family History
This is an Anglicized form of the Old Gaelic patronymic "MacDonnchadha", which translates as "the son of Donnchadha". The name itself consists of elements meaning "brown (donn)", plus "battle (chatha)". Originally, two separate clans existed in Ireland, the first in Connacht, and these MacDonnchadha's were a branch of the MacDermots, the 8th Century Kings of Connacht. The second clan, whose chiefs held the Castle of Kanturk in County Cork, and who were known as the bards of Duhallow, were a branch of the MacCarthys. The name is now rare in Cork, original nameholders, it is believed, changing their name to MacCarthy...Select Audience

My 3x great grandfather was Walter McDonough who was a schoolmaster in the early to mid 1800's. Based on my DNA results it is likely he was in the Galway area. He had a son Simon who immigrated to Manchester, England and married Francis Duffy there in 1843. They did not live in the Little Ireland section of Manchester but near Deansgate. I do have an oil painting of our ancestral home in Ireland but no details about it. I am really trying to find more info about Simon. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Linda Di Domenico

My g g grandfather was Barnard or Brian McDonough, he came from Sligo, he was married to Ellen O'Connor. He migrated to Glasgow, and eventually settled in the north of England. I would love to find records of their birth and marriage, and families. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.
